A 55-year-old man who had been detained in connection with a drug-related case was found dead inside a police station in Sikkim’s Gangtok district on July 29, prompting an official investigation into the incident.
The deceased has been identified as Purney Darjee. According to police, he allegedly died by suicide while in custody at Singtam Police Station.
A senior police officer said Darjee was found hanging inside the police station just hours after he had been detained in connection with the drug-related case.
Police have sent the body for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. Authorities have also initiated an investigation to establish the circumstances that led to the custodial death.
