TEZPUR, Feb 21: A late-night operation conducted by police in Assam’s Sonitpur district led to the arrest of a 29-year-old man and the recovery of firearms and sharp weapons from his rented accommodation, officials said on Saturday.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a team from Tezpur Police carried out a raid at a rented house within the jurisdiction of Tezpur Police Station and apprehended Ibrahim Ali (29), a resident of Samdora under the Pachmile area of Tezpur. He was taken into custody following a search of the premises.

During the operation, police recovered a factory-made .22 pistol along with five rounds of live ammunition. Besides the firearm, a sword and a khukuri were also seized from inside the house.

Officials confirmed that the recovered weapons were taken into possession as evidence and that necessary legal proceedings had been initiated against the accused under the relevant provisions of law.

Police sources stated that further investigation was underway to determine the source of the arms and to ascertain whether the accused had any links with criminal networks.

The operation, officials added, formed part of the ongoing drive by district police to curb the illegal possession of arms and to maintain public safety in the region.
