Imphal, March 6: The Manipur Legislative Assembly is set to convene its budget session on March 9, with the state budget expected to be presented during the proceedings. Officials confirmed the development on March 5, indicating that the upcoming session will focus on key financial matters concerning the state.
According to an official notification, the session will begin at 11 a.m. While the announcement did not specify the concluding date, officials suggested that the proceedings are likely to continue for at least a week, during which the state’s annual budget will be tabled and discussed in the House.
The last sitting of the Assembly was held on February 5 and lasted for a single day. That session followed the formation of a popular government in the state after the revocation of President’s Rule in India. A day before the session, Yumnam Khemchand Singh was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Manipur, marking the restoration of an elected government in the violence-affected state.
Earlier, on February 28, Tongbram Robindro Singh, a legislator from the Bharatiya Janata Party, had stated that the budget session would be convened after the festival of Holi.
In a separate directive, Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel instructed all government departments to submit their Annual Administrative Reports for the 2025–26 period so they can be placed before the Assembly during the session.
The session will take place at a time when Manipur continues to face prolonged instability following ethnic clashes between the Meitei community and the Kuki community that erupted on May 3, 2023. The violence began after a tribal solidarity march was organised in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
The conflict has resulted in at least 260 deaths, including civilians from both communities as well as security personnel. Thousands of residents have also been displaced from their homes, highlighting the ongoing challenges facing the state as the Assembly prepares to deliberate on its financial roadmap.
