Imphal, Feb 23: Y Khemchand Singh on February 23 described director Lakshmipriya Devi’s BAFTA victory for her film Boong as a moment of immense pride for both Manipur and the nation, stating that the achievement has firmly placed Manipuri cinema on the global stage.
In a Facebook post, Singh said Devi’s win at the 79th edition of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards 2026 reflected her dedication to meaningful storytelling. He noted that Boong secured the top honour in the Best Children’s & Family Film category, bringing accolades to Manipur and India.
The coming-of-age comedy-drama clinched the award at the ceremony held in London on Sunday. Produced by Excel Entertainment, the banner co-founded by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani, the film emerged as a standout among international contenders in the children’s and family category.
Singh said the honour transcended individual recognition and symbolised the creative strength of Manipur. He observed that Lakshmipriya Devi had consistently brought distinction to the state through her cinematic work and added that the latest accolade further elevated the stature of Manipuri art and culture worldwide. On behalf of the people of the state, he extended appreciation and wished her continued success in inspiring future generations.
At the ceremony, Devi received the trophy from Paddington Bear, the beloved character associated with Paddington The Musical. In her acceptance speech, she made an emotional appeal for peace, drawing warm applause from the audience.
She was joined on stage by producers Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani, along with assistant director Rahul Sharda.
The BAFTA recognition marked a significant milestone for regional Indian cinema, with Boong’s victory underscoring the growing global resonance of stories emerging from Manipur.
