Imphal, June 14: Manipur Director General of Police (DGP) Mukesh Singh has warned that strict action would be taken against individuals carrying weapons and attempting to take the law into their own hands, asserting that security forces would respond in self-defence if fired upon.
Addressing a press conference in Churachandpur on Saturday during his first visit to the district, Singh said proactive security operations would continue until normalcy is completely restored across the State.
“Anyone with arms who tries to take laws into their own hands will be dealt with very strictly. Those with weapons would be arrested. Those who try to fire at us will be dealt with in self-defence,” the police chief said.
Singh stated that nearly 70 per cent of the weapons looted during the ethnic violence in Manipur had been recovered so far, highlighting the ongoing efforts of security agencies to curb armed activities.
Expressing concern over the circulation of misinformation on social media, the DGP said police were closely monitoring online platforms and taking action against those spreading false information capable of fuelling inter-community tensions.
“A lot of misinformation is spreading on social media. We have a social media monitoring cell which takes action against those spreading false information that can lead to inter-community conflict,” he said.
During the visit, Singh interacted with district police officials, personnel of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), Assam Rifles and representatives of civil society organisations in Churachandpur and Bishnupur districts.
According to a police statement, the DGP appreciated the role of security agencies in maintaining law and order and commended district police personnel for recent successes in drug seizures, the arrest of armed miscreants and the recovery of illegal weapons.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to restoring peace, Singh said coordinated operations against armed groups and other unlawful activities would continue as part of ongoing efforts to bring stability back to Manipur.
