Manipur Observes Khongjom Day with High Security, Honours 1891 War Heroes

Imphal, April 23: The Manipur government on Thursday observed Khongjom Day under heightened security in Thoubal district, paying tribute to soldiers who laid down their lives during the Anglo-Manipur War.

The main ceremony was held at the Khongjom War Memorial Complex, where Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla led the observance in the presence of the Chief Minister, Cabinet members, legislators and senior civil and police officials.

The programme began with the laying of floral wreaths, followed by ceremonial honours including a Guard of Honour, General Salute, Reverse Arms, the sounding of the Last Post, a two-minute silence, and concluding drills. Tributes were also paid at the statue of Paona Brajabashi, accompanied by a gun salute.

Traditional tarpon rituals were performed at the Khongjom River in remembrance of the fallen, reflecting the cultural significance attached to the occasion.

Khongjom Day commemorates the historic Battle of Khongjom, regarded as the final stand of the erstwhile Manipuri kingdom against British forces.

Authorities had deployed extensive security measures along key routes and at the memorial site to ensure the smooth conduct of the event. The annual observance continues to serve as a solemn reminder of the valour and sacrifice of Manipuri soldiers.
