Manipur Police Arrest 21 Following Violent Road Protest; Social Media Provocateur Detained

The Manipur Police have apprehended 21 individuals in connection with a series of violent incidents that erupted during a protest rally on April 18. The unrest occurred along the Imphal–Jiribam road, spanning the stretch from Patsoi to Sagolband in the Imphal West district. While the rally was initially organized as a demonstration, authorities reported that the gathering quickly escalated into a confrontation with law enforcement. According to an official police statement, the protesters utilized stone pelting, petrol bombs, catapults, and boulders to target security forces on the ground.

The violence resulted in significant damage to public property and serious physical harm to those maintaining order. Several official vehicles were vandalized during the chaos, and three personnel from the 232 Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) sustained grievous injuries. Security forces eventually managed to disperse the mob and bring the situation under control. Following these events, the police initiated a crackdown to identify those responsible for the assault on the security apparatus and the destruction of state property.

In a separate but related move to preserve public order, the police also confirmed the arrest of 23-year-old Tensubam Lamyanba Meitei, a resident of Imphal East and a member of the Arambai Tenggol group. He is accused of utilizing social media to post provocative and inflammatory content. Investigators identified a Facebook account operating under the name “Meetei Nongsa Lamyanba,” which was allegedly used to share threats and explicit calls for violence. Authorities noted that such digital activities posed a direct risk to communal harmony and public safety during an already volatile period.

Law enforcement agencies have issued a stern warning that strict legal action will be taken against any individuals found inciting violence or attempting to disturb the peace, whether on the streets or through digital platforms. As investigations into both the physical violence on the Imphal–Jiribam road and the online threats continue, the police remain on high alert to prevent further escalations. The arrests signal a broader effort by the state to maintain stability and ensure that those participating in or inciting criminal activities face the full weight of the law.
