Manipur Security Forces Arrest Key Suspect, Seize Large Cache of Arms in Hill District Operations

Imphal, March 25: In a significant security operation on March 24, Manipur police and allied forces apprehended a key accused and recovered a substantial cache of illegal arms and ammunition from the state’s hill districts.

Md Shanjit Khan, 38, a resident of Kabarastan Yairipok Bamon Leikai in Thoubal district, was arrested in the border town of Moreh in Tengnoupal district. Khan was wanted in connection with a First Information Report registered at Senapati Police Station in December 2025. Authorities described him as linked to a serious criminal case, though the precise details of his alleged involvement are under investigation.

In a parallel operation, security forces carried out searches and area domination exercises around Tingkhai Khullen and Nepali Khutti under New Keithelmanbi Police Station in Kangpokpi district. The raids led to the recovery of one 9 mm carbine with magazine, two country-made 9 mm pistols with four magazines, three single-barrel bolt-action rifles, two single-barrel pull mechanism rifles, two improvised mortars, seven 12-bore cartridges, 55 rounds of various ammunition, and approximately two kilograms of pellets.

Officials said the seizures underscore the persistent presence of illegal arms in sensitive regions and highlight the necessity of ongoing security operations to neutralise potential threats. The developments come amid heightened vigilance in Manipur’s hill districts, which have recently faced intermittent tensions and security challenges.

Further investigations are underway to determine connections between the arrested individual and the recovered weapons, as well as to trace any wider networks involved in the illicit procurement and distribution of arms.
