Security forces in Manipur intensified their crackdown on drug trafficking and insurgent activity with three arrests made on January 17, including the seizure of a large consignment of opium near the international border. The coordinated operations were carried out across Churachandpur and Bishnupur districts, police officials said.
In a major anti-narcotics action, police arrested Nang Lian Siam, 35, a resident of ZMA Road in Vengnuam, Churachandpur district. He was apprehended along the Behiang side of Tiddim Road under the jurisdiction of Singngat police station. During the operation, security personnel recovered 16.6 kg of opium from his possession, dealing a significant blow to cross-border drug trafficking networks operating in the region.
In separate operations in Bishnupur district, security forces arrested two active cadres of banned insurgent outfits from their respective residences. Sagapam Tomba Singh, 24, from Ningthoukhong Kha Khunou Maning Leikai Ward No. 4 under Bishnupur police station, was identified as a member of the RPF/PLA. Another arrest was made at Chairel Ahallup under Kumbi police station, where Laishram Thoithoi Meitei, 29, also known as Lanngamba, was taken into custody for his alleged links with PREPAK (Pro).
Authorities said the arrests reflect sustained and coordinated efforts by security agencies to curb both narcotics smuggling and militant activities in Manipur. Further investigations are underway to determine the extent of the networks involved and to identify additional links connected to the arrested individuals.
