Mass Resignations Jolt Karbi Anglong Congress Ahead of 2026 Polls

Diphu:  In a major setback for the Karbi Anglong Congress ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, more than 150 leaders and workers from East Karbi Anglong district resigned en masse on Thursday, citing a “complete loss of confidence” in the district party president and the current leadership.

The dramatic revolt unfolded at KASA Stadium in Diphu, where the dissatisfied members gathered, shouted anti-leadership slogans, and then marched to the District Congress Office to submit their collective resignation letters. Those who quit include office-bearers and active workers from the district, block, mandal and primary units—indicating a collapse across multiple organisational levels in the hill district.

Sources close to the disgruntled leaders confirmed that the entire group is preparing to join the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the coming days, a development expected to significantly strengthen the saffron party’s position in the strategically important autonomous council region.

This marks the second major defection from the Congress in the hills within weeks, following a similar mass resignation in West Karbi Anglong recently. Political observers believe the back-to-back revolts reflect deepening discontent and organisational breakdown within the Congress in a region once considered its stronghold.

With the Assembly elections only months away, the Congress high command in Guwahati has remained noticeably silent. Local leaders, meanwhile, have allegedly dismissed the rebels, claiming they had “come only to show their faces.” The series of defections has intensified speculation that the Congress may face one of its most challenging electoral battles in the Sixth Schedule areas in the upcoming polls.
