Massive Fire in Maligaon’s Bharalumukh Claims Two Lives After Gas Cylinder Explosion

A devastating fire tore through the Post Office building near Gate No. 8 in Maligaon’s Bharalumukh area on Sunday, November 16, triggering panic as thick smoke quickly spread across the neighbourhood. The blaze, which began on the third floor, was initially believed to have been caused by an electrical short circuit, but eyewitnesses later reported that the situation worsened after a cooking gas cylinder exploded inside a residence where a small birthday celebration was taking place.

Residents said the fire escalated within moments, with a sudden burst of flames followed by a loud explosion that sent dense smoke billowing through the area. The blast caused widespread alarm, forcing people to rush out of nearby homes and shops as the fire intensified.

Multiple fire tenders from the Fire & Emergency Services arrived at the scene and launched an urgent rescue effort. Firefighters managed to retrieve two victims who had been trapped inside the building. The injured, identified as 47-year-old Debo Choudhury and 36-year-old Pompi Choudhury, were found in critical condition and were given immediate medical assistance before being shifted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital. Despite the efforts of medical teams, both individuals later died due to severe burn injuries and excessive smoke inhalation.

Authorities have begun an inquiry to establish the precise cause of the fire. Further details are awaited as the investigation continues.
