Shillong, Feb 16: The Budget Session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly commenced on February 16 with members from both treasury and opposition benches attending the ceremonial opening, paving the way for discussions expected to centre on illegal mining and public expenditure.
Officials confirmed that the state budget for 2026–27 will be presented on February 20, while the session is scheduled to continue until February 27.
The proceedings began with the playing of Vande Mataram in accordance with a recent directive issued by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, followed by the national anthem and the state anthem. The Governor’s address formally inaugurated the session and will be followed by a motion of thanks and debates in the days ahead.
Illegal mining is anticipated to be a key issue during the session, alongside discussions on financial allocations, development initiatives, governance measures and sector-specific reforms. Opposition members are expected to question the government on regulatory mechanisms and enforcement efforts, particularly in the mining sector.
Security arrangements were strengthened in and around the Assembly complex as the session began, with additional police personnel deployed to ensure order.
The budget presentation on February 20 is expected to outline the government’s fiscal roadmap for the upcoming financial year, with emphasis on revenue mobilisation and prudent expenditure management.
