Shillong, May 27: A committee of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on May 26 carried out inspections of several key infrastructure projects in East Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi districts, including the under-construction Mawkhanu Football Stadium, sports facilities at Umsawli and the water sports project at Umtham.
The inspection was conducted by the Committee on Government Assurances under the leadership of chairman Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar, accompanied by MLAs M Ampareen Lyngdoh, Celestine Lyngdoh and Ollan Singh Suin. Officials from the Sports Department and representatives of the construction company were also present during the visit.
Following the inspection, Tongkhar said the committee was satisfied with the progress of the projects and expressed confidence that the works would be completed within the planned timeline.
Referring to the football stadium project, he described it as one of the state’s major developments and said Meghalaya was preparing to host what he termed as the largest football ground in the country.
He also credited Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma for initiating the project in the state.
The football-specific stadium at Mawkhanu is being developed with a seating capacity of 40,000 and is expected to be completed by the latter half of 2028 under the existing agreement. The project, estimated at Rs 732 crore, is being executed by KPC Projects Limited as part of the government’s broader plan to strengthen Meghalaya’s profile as a football destination.
The committee also inspected the water sports centre at Umtham, where a specialised canoe slalom course is being developed to support adventure sports and tourism activities. The project covers 14 acres and has an estimated cost of Rs 21 crore.
During the visit to New Shillong, Tongkhar also noted the pace of infrastructure development in the area, particularly ongoing road expansion works.
He said the committee was impressed by the scale of development underway and added that timely completion of these projects would allow residents to benefit from the expanding sports and public infrastructure being created in the state.
