Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Reviews New Complex as Power Supply Becomes Key Priority

Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma inspected the under-construction assembly complex at Mawdiangdiang on December 11, with the availability of power connectivity emerging as the most urgent requirement ahead of the venue’s first official event.

The new complex is scheduled to host a pre-Christmas celebration on December 19, marking its maiden use. However, Sangma’s discussions with officials of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited highlighted the need to expedite the installation of the main power line, signalling that essential supply infrastructure is yet to be fully operational.

Accompanied by Deputy Speaker Limison D. Sangma and officials from several departments, the Speaker reviewed the progress of ongoing works and preparations for the upcoming gathering. The team inspected multiple components of the project, including land acquisition matters handled in coordination with the Urban Affairs Department.

Sangma expressed satisfaction with the current pace of construction and reiterated confidence that deadlines set by the High-Powered Committee would be achieved. The main assembly hall is expected to be completed by June 2026, after which all legislative proceedings will shift to the new premises.

The inspection team also included Commissioner and Secretary Andrew Simons, Assembly Secretary Malthus S. Sangma, the executive engineer, the technical adviser to the assembly, and representatives from MeECL and Urban Affairs.

The Mawdiangdiang complex marks a major infrastructure milestone for the state legislature, with the December 19 celebration serving as a preliminary test ahead of its full-scale functioning next year.
