Meghalaya Changes Rules for Birth and Death Registration Delays

SHILLONG: Applicants seeking to register births or deaths more than two years after they occurred must now obtain an order from a Judicial Magistrate of the First Class (JMFC), following an amendment to the registration law that took effect on October 1, 2026.

The East Khasi Hills District Magistrate issued a public notice outlining the revised procedure under the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Act, 2026, enacted by the Ministry of Law and Justice.

Under the amended Section 13, the authority to approve such delayed registrations has shifted from Executive Magistrates to Judicial Magistrates of the First Class. The requirement applies to both new and pending applications involving delays exceeding two years.

Applicants must now approach the competent judicial authority directly to obtain the necessary order for registration.
