Shillong, April 12: Conrad K Sangma on April 11 inaugurated a shelter home for destitute and abandoned women at Mawïong Rim, announcing a grant of Rs 25 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund (CMSDF) to support its operations.

The facility, named Nabon Memorial Home, has been set up by the Jingiaseng Kynthei Shillong Ri-Lum Presbytery and is aimed at providing safe accommodation and care for vulnerable women in the region. The home has been named after Ka Nabon, regarded as the first Christian woman to embrace the faith in the Khasi Hills, with the Chief Minister describing the naming as a tribute to courage, faith, and service.

Sangma said the shelter would serve as a place of hope and compassion, ensuring that destitute and abandoned women have access to a secure environment where they can live with dignity and care.

Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister also interacted with 41 meritorious students from Child Care Institutions under the Social Welfare Department and presented them with cash awards in recognition of their academic achievements.

He further announced that he would personally support the students’ secondary education through the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, highlighting the importance of encouraging children from challenging backgrounds. Sangma noted that their determination serves as an inspiration, demonstrating that circumstances should not limit aspirations but instead motivate individuals to pursue their goals.
