SHILLONG: Meghalaya’s electoral authorities have identified 6,51,644 cases requiring notice or verification under the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, while hearings have been temporarily suspended in 14 Assembly constituencies of East Khasi Hills due to the prevailing law and order situation.
The figures emerged during a review meeting chaired by the Chief Electoral Officer, Meghalaya, with district election officials and other electoral authorities on August 25.
Of the cases identified, 2,22,786 electors were categorised as having “No Mapping” with the 2005 electoral records. The remaining cases involved discrepancies detected through the ECINET system, including mismatches in electors’ or parents’ names, unusual age differences between parents and children, and other inconsistencies in family records.
Authorities have so far generated 6,43,439 notices, of which 4,78,217 have been delivered. Officials were directed to expedite delivery while ensuring voters receive adequate time to attend hearings and submit supporting documents.
A total of 62,343 hearings have been completed, accounting for 9.69 per cent of the cases identified for notice and hearing.
The election office reiterated that no name can be removed from the Draft Electoral Roll without due process. Electors receiving notices must be given an opportunity to explain discrepancies and submit supporting documents.
Hearings conducted by Electoral Registration Officers and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers have been temporarily cancelled in 14 Assembly constituencies of East Khasi Hills following an order by the District Magistrate. The suspension does not cover 26-Shella, 27-Pynursla and 28-Sohra.
The election office has received 5,848 applications since publication of the Draft Electoral Roll, including 2,840 Form 6 applications for inclusion, 255 Form 7 objections, 503 Form 8 applications for shifting and 2,250 applications for corrections.
The claims and objections period will remain open until September 4, with disposal scheduled to continue until October 3. The Final Electoral Roll is scheduled for publication on October 7.
Authorities have also asked political parties and Booth Level Agents to assist voters in checking their details, responding to notices and filing claims or objections where necessary.
