Meghalaya High Court Seeks Report on Public Inconvenience Caused by Fishing Competition

Shillong: The High Court of Meghalaya has directed state authorities to submit a detailed report regarding the public inconvenience allegedly caused by a fishing competition held in the region.

The order was issued by a division bench comprising Chief Justice Soumen Sen and Justice W. Diengdoh on October 27, 2025, during the hearing of a public interest litigation initiated by the Registrar General of the High Court. The case originated from a letter addressed to the former Chief Justice by Joannes JTL Lamare, raising concerns over the event’s impact on the public.

During the proceedings, advocate A Kumar, the Advocate General, appeared for the state, assisted by Additional Advocate General K Khan and Additional Senior Government Advocate AH Kharwanlang. The Union of India was represented by Deputy Solicitor General of India Dr N Mozika, with advocate K Gurung.

In its directive, the bench ordered the respondents to file a report in the form of an affidavit within three weeks, detailing the measures taken in response to the alleged public inconvenience. The matter has been listed for the next hearing on November 25, 2025.

The court also authorised the publication of its order in the press, instructing that any media coverage must include the names of the judges constituting the bench.

While specific details of the inconvenience caused by the fishing competition remain uncertain, the forthcoming affidavit is expected to shed light on the incident and outline the remedial steps taken by the authorities.
