A special court in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district has sentenced a man to 25 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually abusing a child in a case dating back to 2020.
The Special Judge (POCSO) in Khliehriat delivered the verdict on August 31, 2026, finding the accused, Comming Massar, guilty under Section 376(3) of the Indian Penal Code, read with Sections 5(l), 5(n), and 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. In addition to the 25-year primary term and a Rs 25,000 fine, the court awarded Massar five years of rigorous imprisonment and a Rs 10,000 fine under IPC Section 506 for criminal intimidation.
The case originated from an investigation launched at the Khliehriat Women Police Station in September 2020, led by Women Police Inspector O Tyngkan.
Following Massar’s arrest, the prosecution submitted a formal chargesheet before the trial court on November 18, 2021. The district police confirmed the conviction in an official statement released on September 16, 2026.
