Meghalaya Signs Jal Jeevan Mission MoU, CM Sangma Says 83% Rural Homes Now Have Tap Water

Shillong, March 27: Conrad K Sangma on March 27 virtually joined the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Meghalaya government and the National Jal Jeevan Mission, reaffirming the state’s commitment to providing safe drinking water to every household.

The MoU is aimed at strengthening coordination between state agencies and the central mission directorate to ensure efficient utilisation of funds and timely achievement of targets. Sangma said Meghalaya has already made notable progress under the scheme, with over 83 per cent of rural households connected to piped water supply.

He added that continued collaboration with the Government of India would be crucial to ensuring timely support and successful completion of the mission, while also improving water infrastructure and overall quality of life.

Launched in 2019, the Jal Jeevan Mission seeks to provide functional household tap connections to all rural homes across the country. Meghalaya’s current coverage places it among the better-performing states in the Northeast, although extending connectivity to remote and hilly regions is expected to remain a key challenge.
