Shillong, August 20: Meghalaya’s tourism stakeholders have condemned the violence and vandalism reported during a rally in the state on August 19, warning that continued tensions could affect tourism and inter-state travel.
The statement was issued by the Tour Operators Association of Meghalaya, Meghalaya Rural Tourism Forum, Tour Guides Association of Meghalaya, Federation of Shillong Hotels, Meghalaya Tourism Development Forum and Meghalaya Rural Tourism Cooperative Federation Ltd.
The organisations said they respected the right to protest but stressed that demonstrations must remain peaceful. They alleged that vehicles from outside Meghalaya, including tourist taxis and buses, were attacked and vandalised, while pedestrians and bystanders were also affected.
The stakeholders said the incidents could damage Meghalaya’s image as a safe and welcoming tourist destination, with operators already reporting cancellations and concerns among visitors. They also said developments in Assam following the violence were affecting people dependent on inter-state travel.
Questioning the security arrangements for the rally, the groups said adequate police and district administration arrangements should have been in place as the government had granted permission for the demonstration. They called for a review of the arrangements and action against those responsible for the violence.
The tourism bodies highlighted the sector’s role in supporting homestay operators, guides, drivers, artisans, restaurants and small businesses, particularly in rural areas.
They appealed to the government and law enforcement agencies to ensure accountability while protecting the rights of peaceful protesters. They also urged organisations and citizens to avoid retaliation and pursue grievances through dialogue and democratic means.
The stakeholders warned that prolonged tension could undermine years of efforts to build Meghalaya’s tourism reputation and called for collective steps to restore visitor confidence and protect tourism-linked livelihoods.
