Millet Awareness Programme Held at Gogamukh 

Gogamukh: A Farmers’ Field Day-cum-Awareness Programme on “Foxtail and Finger Millet Cultivation” was organised at Tajik village in Gogamukh on March 25 to promote millet farming among small and marginal farmers in the region. The programme, organised by ICAR Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), Assam, witnessed the participation of around 100 farmers, including a significant number of women. The initiative aimed to raise awareness about the benefits of millet cultivation in the North Eastern Region, highlighting its suitability for water-scarce conditions and its resilience to climate change.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Rahul Singh, Senior Scientist, welcomed participants, while Lohit Kumar Baishya elaborated on improved millet cultivation practices. P. K. Mishra spoke on the importance of water and land management in enhancing millet production. Progressive farmer Benjamin Doley shared his practical experiences, encouraging others to adopt millet farming.

Participants were sensitised about irrigation needs, improved techniques, and the economic potential of millets. Special emphasis was laid on encouraging women farmers to integrate millet-based products into their daily diets. Organised under the leadership of Ch. Srinivasa Rao, Director of IARI, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Millets Research, the programme is expected to enhance livelihood security, promote sustainable agriculture, and boost farmers’ income in the region.
