Mizoram Disburses Rs 118 Crore to Ginger Farmers Under ‘Bana Kaih’ Scheme

Aizawl: The Mizoram government has disbursed over ₹118 crore this year as support price for the procurement of raw ginger from farmers under its flagship ‘Bana Kaih’ (Handholding) scheme, officials confirmed on Monday.

The figure was revealed during a meeting of the Mizoram Agricultural Marketing Board (MAMB), chaired by Chief Minister Lalduhoma. According to an official release, a total of ₹118.89 crore has been paid to ginger growers, with an additional ₹20 crore expected to be released soon. This year, the government procured 3,38,354 quintals of raw ginger from cultivators across the state.

Officials further informed that the state is anticipating around ₹9 crore in financial assistance from the Centre under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) for the 2025–26 fiscal year to bolster ginger procurement efforts.

The meeting also reviewed preparations for the upcoming harvest season and Mizoram’s participation in a forthcoming NITI Aayog consultation on ginger cultivation and trade.

Earlier, Mizo National Front leader Vanlalruata had alleged irregularities in the procurement and distribution of ginger in Champhai district, following which a state-level inquiry was ordered. Officials said the probe team has already submitted its findings to the Agricultural Marketing Board for examination.

The ‘Bana Kaih’ initiative, launched by the Mizoram government, aims to ensure fair pricing, market stability, and greater self-reliance for local farmers, strengthening the state’s agricultural economy.
