Mizoram Government Shifts Proposed State University Location from Aizawl to Lunglei

The Mizoram government has officially redirected its plans for the upcoming state university, choosing Lunglei town as the new site for the institution. This move represents a major departure from the initial strategy, which had originally slated the university for the state capital, Aizawl. The decision was finalized during a high-level meeting led by Chief Minister Lalduhoma, where ministers, legislators, and senior officials gathered to discuss the regional repositioning of the academic hub.

To facilitate this change, the state government is preparing to introduce a formal Bill during the forthcoming Assembly session. This legislation aims to amend the Mizoram State University Act, 2025, specifically to authorize the shift in the university’s legal location. The high-level meeting included key figures such as Higher and Technical Education Minister Vanlalthlana and Lunglei High Powered Committee vice-chairman and MLA V. Malsawmtluanga, alongside other representatives from the district, ensuring administrative alignment on the proposal.

This university initiative is rooted in the Mizoram State University Bill, 2025, which the Assembly passed earlier this March. The primary driver for the legislation is the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which requires the establishment of teaching-intensive universities to handle college affiliations within a 15-year timeframe of the policy’s implementation. Minister Vanlalthlana had previously noted that the institution would operate under a cluster model, integrating various colleges and institutions into a unified academic structure. While Aizawl was the first choice, this latest decision prioritizes Lunglei, bringing a premier higher education facility to the state’s southern region.
