Aizawl, Feb 13: In a major step towards agro-based industrialisation, Mizoram on February 13 inaugurated the Northeast’s first fish canning facility at Zawlnuam in Mamit district, aiming to strengthen value-added fisheries production and improve income prospects for local farmers.
The plant was inaugurated by Fisheries, Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Resources Minister Lalrinliana Vanlalruata, who termed the initiative a new milestone in the state’s industrial development. He said the facility would bridge long-standing market gaps by enabling fish farmers to process and package their produce locally instead of relying solely on raw fish sales. With the introduction of modern preservation and canning techniques, the plant is expected to enhance shelf life, maintain quality standards and ensure better price realisation.
The minister underlined the importance of maintaining strict quality control and consumer-focused practices to build brand credibility and sustain demand. He reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening infrastructure that supports farmer welfare and food processing industries. As part of the broader strategy for agriculture-led growth, a nut processing unit is being set up in Zamuang village, while efforts are ongoing to expand palm oil cultivation in Mamit, identified as an aspirational district for agricultural development.
The fish canning project was proposed by the Cooperation Department to the Centre in July 2024 following sustained efforts by local representatives, including the opposition legislator from Zawlnuam under the Mizoram National Front. Developed under the Integrated Cooperative Development Project (ICDP) at a cost of Rs 65 lakh, the facility includes Rs 40 lakh for machinery and Rs 25 lakh for construction.
Officials stated that the plant can process 50 kilograms of fish per batch and produce approximately 120 cans within a two-hour production cycle. The initiative is expected to reduce post-harvest losses, provide a dependable processing outlet close to farmers’ communities and support Mizoram’s drive towards sustainable, value-driven agricultural growth.
