Mizoram launches EMS sports initiative to groom young athletes

Mizoram has launched a major grassroots sports development initiative aimed at identifying and training young athletes for national and international competitions, including the 2036 Olympics.

State Home Minister K. Sapdanga on Monday inaugurated the Empowering Mizoram Sports (EMS) programme under the Bana Kaih (handholding) scheme, calling it a “milestone” for the state’s sporting ecosystem.

Under the initiative, children aged 8 to 15 will undergo 15 days of basic coaching across 24 selected sports disciplines. Officials said priority would be given to sports where Mizoram has strong medal potential or higher Olympic visibility. The scheme will operate through a public-private partnership model to ensure wider community involvement.

The programme seeks to systematically identify promising talent from an early age and prepare them for higher-level competition. Sapdanga said the initiative would open opportunities for Mizo youth to gain exposure and excel on the global stage.
