Mob Attacks Family over Witchcraft Allegations in Meghalaya’s Sohra; 22 Rescued, 9 Arrested

Shillong: A family in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills narrowly escaped harm after a violent mob of around 200 people attacked their home in the Khliehshnong area of Sohra on October 30, accusing them of practising witchcraft. Police confirmed the incident on October 31, describing the situation as “extremely volatile.”

The attack took place around 9:30 pm when the residence of Ham Shangpliang was surrounded by an enraged crowd that threatened to burn the house down. According to police, the violence stemmed from claims made by a local boy who alleged that he had “visions” of Shangpliang and believed he was under a spell. The unverified accusation quickly spread, fuelling panic and mob mobilisation.

Police teams from Sohra, supported by local magistrates, rushed to the site to protect the residents. However, they encountered fierce resistance as the mob refused to disperse. “To ensure the safety of those inside and create a safe corridor for evacuation, tear gas and stun grenades had to be used,” East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem told PTI.

Reinforcements, including personnel from the Special Operations Team in Shillong, were deployed to restore order. Through a coordinated effort, the Shangpliang family and two other families—who had gathered for a death anniversary memorial service—were safely evacuated. In total, 22 people, including minors, were rescued and taken to Shillong Civil Hospital for medical examination.

Eight police personnel sustained injuries during the operation. Nine individuals identified as key instigators were arrested, and a case has been registered at the Sohra police station. Authorities said more arrests are likely as the investigation continues.

Condemning the attack, police urged the public to reject superstition and mob violence. “Such acts of mob justice driven by superstition are dangerous and unacceptable. The law will take its course against those involved,” Syiem stated.
