Silchar: Marking National Road Safety Month 2026 and as part of Indian Army Day celebrations, Silchar Lok Sabha MP Parimal Suklabaidya on Thursday flagged off a month-long mega road safety awareness bike rally titled “Pather Barta Pothe Jatra” from the Masimpur Military Station.
The campaign seeks to address the alarming rise in road accident fatalities across the country. Organisers cited recent statistics indicating that over 1.72 lakh people lose their lives annually in road accidents in India, with the most vulnerable age group being between 18 and 45 years. Road accidents also cause an economic loss amounting to nearly three per cent of the national GDP.
As part of the initiative, the rally will traverse all 162 gram panchayats, three municipal boards and one municipal corporation within the Silchar Lok Sabha constituency. Throughout the month, the team will conduct road safety awareness programmes in schools, colleges and government offices to promote responsible driving and pedestrian safety.

The campaign will also focus on training police personnel and citizens in basic life-saving skills and sensitising them about the provisions of the Good Samaritan Act, which protects those who assist accident victims.
Speaking to the media, MP Parimal Suklabaidya said the rally aims to take the message of safe road practices to the grassroots level. “Through this road journey, we want to create awareness and work collectively towards reducing road accidents and saving precious lives,” he said.
The initiative has received support from the Indian Army, civil administration and local institutions, reflecting a coordinated effort to strengthen road safety awareness across the region.
