Morigaon Doctor Faces Show-Cause After Performing 21 C-Sections in 10 Hours

Morigaon: The Morigaon district administration has issued a show-cause notice to senior gynecologist Dr. Kantheswar Bordoloi after he reportedly performed 21 caesarean deliveries within ten hours, raising concerns over patient safety and medical protocols.

The notice, signed by Additional District Commissioner (Health) Nitisha Bora, was served on September 6. Officials said Dr. Bordoloi carried out the surgeries between 3:40 pm on September 5 and 1:50 am on September 6 at Morigaon Civil Hospital’s main operating theatre.

Authorities directed the doctor to furnish case-wise details, including compliance with sterilisation protocols, documentation of fetal distress, records of newborns admitted to the Sick Neonatal Care Unit (SNCU), and the roles of assisting staff. The administration also noted that pre- and post-operative notes were inadequately maintained, which could compromise infection control. Dr. Bordoloi has been asked to submit his explanation within three days.

Defending his actions, the senior physician said he had followed due procedures. “What I have done is nothing unusual; other doctors also perform surgeries at such a pace. Perhaps someone complained against me,” he told reporters. He explained that while a standard C-section takes about 25 minutes, uncomplicated cases may be completed within 15 minutes. With two operating tables, he said, sterilisation could be alternated without delay.

Of the 21 cases, 19 mothers and infants have been discharged safely, while two remain hospitalised, including one referred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.

Frustrated by the controversy, Dr. Bordoloi remarked, “It is disheartening to face such questions after so many years of service. If such conspiracies continue, I may consider resigning from government service.”
