Morikolong Robbery Case Accused Killed in Police Gunfight in Assam’s Nagaon

Nagaon, May 26: A man wanted in connection with the Morikolong robbery case was killed during a late-night exchange of fire between police and alleged criminals in Assam’s Nagaon district on May 25.

The deceased was identified as Khairul Ali, also known as Moni, a resident of Thana Road in North Lakhimpur town. Police identified him as one of the main accused in the Morikolong robbery case and said he had been absconding since the incident.

According to police sources, Khairul had allegedly returned to Nagaon on Monday night and was suspected of planning another robbery. Acting on specific intelligence inputs regarding the movement of the group, police launched an operation and moved to the Borkandoli area in Rangalu.

Police stated that the operation led to a confrontation after the suspected robbers came face to face with the police team. During the encounter, the group allegedly opened fire at the personnel, prompting police to retaliate.

Khairul Ali sustained bullet injuries during the exchange of fire and was immediately taken to Nagaon Medical College and Hospital. However, police said he died while being taken for treatment.

During the operation, police recovered a 7.65 mm pistol along with two empty cartridges from his possession.

Authorities said further investigation into the matter is ongoing.
