IMPHAL, Sept 9: The mortal remains of renowned Manipuri musician Chongtham Vikram Singh, who died following an alleged assault in Delhi on September 7, were brought to Imphal on Wednesday.
Family members, friends and well-wishers gathered at Imphal International Airport to receive the body. The atmosphere remained sombre as mourners paid their last respects.
Singh was allegedly assaulted in Delhi’s Sunlight Colony on September 7. Delhi Police have arrested eight people in connection with the case.
Speaking after receiving his brother’s body, Chongtham Vivek said the death had caused deep grief across Manipur and the music fraternity. He demanded strict punishment for those responsible and urged authorities to complete the investigation and legal proceedings swiftly.
The incident has triggered public anger in Manipur, with people demanding stringent punishment for those found guilty. It has also raised concerns across the Northeast over alleged racial discrimination and violence against people from the region.
Singh’s mortal remains will be taken to his residence at Thangmeiband Lourungpurel in Imphal West, where his last rites will be performed.
