Guwahati: Union Minister of State for Agriculture & Farmers Welfare Ramnath Thakur visited ICAR-ATARI, Zone VI, Guwahati, on Thursday to review the institute’s functioning, research progress, extension activities and staff welfare initiatives. The visit underscored the Centre’s focus on strengthening agricultural research and promoting farmer-centric innovation in the North Eastern region.
During the review meeting, the Minister urged scientists and officials to work towards creating a distinct institutional identity rooted in excellence and measurable outcomes. “My goal is not merely to raise issues but to change the situation,” he said, emphasizing tangible benefits for farmers and greater accountability in research and extension services.

Earlier, Director Dr. G. Kadirvel presented a detailed overview of the institute’s key achievements and ongoing programmes. The meeting was attended by Dr. V. K. Gupta, Director of ICAR-NRC on Pig, Rani; Dr. Alpana Das of ICAR-CPCRI Regional Station, Kahikuchi; along with officials from neighbouring ICAR institutes and staff members of ATARI.
The visit concluded with a renewed commitment to transform agricultural research institutions into dynamic, farmer-oriented centres of excellence contributing to rural prosperity and national food security.
