MoS Pabitra Margherita Ramps Up Outreach in Jorhat; Over 100 Join BJP

Guwahati: Union Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, visited Mariani in the Jorhat Lok Sabha constituency on Monday, where more than a hundred people from the Congress and other organisations joined the BJP in his presence.

The visit is part of Margherita’s intensified outreach across the constituency—currently represented by Opposition MP Gaurav Gogoi—as political activities pick up ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. Over recent weeks, he has been touring all ten Assembly segments under Jorhat to strengthen the BJP’s organisational network and address local grievances.

During the programme, Margherita took a sharp dig at the Opposition’s renewed alliance efforts under the Asom Sonmilito Morcha, calling it the “Lily Party”. “Before every election, they gather at Lily Hotel. This time they met somewhere else because they felt embarrassed,” he said, asserting that voters had consistently rejected the alliance.

Highlighting BJP’s strong performance in recent Panchayat polls, he expressed confidence about future victories, particularly of Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi. “With the BJP in both Centre and state, we are always committed to supporting the people of Mariani,” he said.

On the ongoing demand for justice in the death of cultural icon Zubeen Garg, Margherita said he has avoided public statements as the SIT and a judicial commission are already probing the case. “Every Assamese wants justice. Let the truth come out and the guilty face the harshest punishment,” he added.

Margherita’s frequent visits and public engagements signal a renewed push by the BJP to consolidate its position in Upper Assam as the 2026 polls draw closer.
