Mouldy Sweets Found at Moran Hotel, Food Safety Deptt. Launches Probe

Moran: The Food Safety Department has launched an investigation after mouldy sweets were allegedly sold to customers at a hotel near the Moran bus stand in Assam’s Dibrugarh district. The incident came to light after a customer purchased Bundia laddus from Tasty Treat and took them home. The customer and his pregnant sister reportedly consumed the sweets before noticing that they had developed mould and had spoiled. The matter was subsequently brought to the attention of the Moran unit of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), which alerted the authorities.

Following the complaint, a Food Safety Officer, accompanied by Moran Police and AASU representatives, inspected the establishment. During the inspection, officials reportedly found mould on several milk- and chhana-based sweets. The inspection also revealed that the refrigeration unit used to store the sweets was non-functional. Officials further found that the establishment did not have a valid Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) licence, according to the report.

The Food Safety Department destroyed the spoiled sweets and initiated the process of registering a case against the establishment. The incident has triggered concern among local residents, who have called for regular inspections of hotels, sweet shops and other food establishments in Moran. They stressed that food safety checks should be conducted routinely rather than only after complaints emerge. Authorities are expected to take further action based on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
