N Biren Singh Warns of Ecological Collapse Amid Alarming Forest Destruction in Manipur

Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has issued a stark warning over what he describes as “widespread destruction” of the state’s forests, urging swift and decisive action to avert a looming environmental disaster. Singh raised the alarm on Wednesday night after sharing a video clip on X, claiming it shows illegal poppy cultivation and extensive deforestation in the Kolten and Selsi hill ranges under T. Waichong Sub-division in Kangpokpi district.

According to Singh, the disturbing visuals offer a clear explanation for Manipur’s recurring floods, which he said are directly linked to the large-scale depletion of forest cover. In his post, he lamented that the state’s natural resources were being destroyed while attention remained focused on internal conflicts. He criticised the silence of political leaders, stating that no one had spoken out against the environmental devastation unfolding across the region.

Singh questioned the apparent inaction of the Forest Department, raising concerns about its failure to take meaningful steps against those responsible. He further alleged that armed militant groups are suspected to be behind the poppy plantations and deforestation in the affected areas. The former Chief Minister warned that without concrete intervention, Manipur could soon find itself facing an existential crisis fuelled by ecological imbalance.

His remarks come at a time when the state continues to grapple with ethnic tensions, displacement and administrative challenges. Observers note that these pressing issues have shifted focus away from emerging environmental threats, even as the destruction of forests continues to accelerate. Singh’s warning underscores the urgency of addressing both governance and ecological concerns to safeguard Manipur’s fragile environment.
