Nagaland CM Announces Ex-Gratia for Victims of Kohima Bus Accident

Kohima, Feb 2: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has announced ex-gratia assistance for the families affected by a tragic bus accident in Kohima district that claimed five lives earlier this week. The chief minister said the families of those killed in the accident would receive Rs 2 lakh each, while passengers who sustained serious injuries would be provided compensation of Rs 50,000. He also conveyed his wishes for the speedy recovery of those undergoing treatment.

The accident occurred on Saturday evening when a bus carrying 32 passengers overturned nearly 21 kilometres from Kohima. All five victims were women, and officials said they were members of the Chümoukedima Ao Baptist Church. Expressing deep condolences, Rio said the state government stood with the bereaved families during the period of grief and assured them of all possible support.

According to an official statement issued on February 1, a preliminary inquiry has ruled out rash or drunken driving as the cause of the accident. Authorities suspect a possible mechanical failure, and a detailed technical examination of the vehicle is currently underway to determine the exact cause.

Police officials said that the bodies of the deceased were handed over to their families after the completion of necessary legal formalities. The injured passengers were shifted to the Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research in Dimapur, where they are receiving medical care.

The state government has said it will closely monitor the investigation and ensure that appropriate steps are taken based on the findings, while extending continued assistance to the victims and their families.
