Kohima: In a heartfelt ceremony held at the Nagaland Police Headquarters on Monday, state police officials paid homage to 186 police personnel from across India who laid down their lives in the line of duty over the past year. The event marked Police Commemoration Day, observed nationwide every October 21 to honour the courage and sacrifice of police officers who died serving the nation.Addressing the gathering, Director General of Police (DGP) Rupin Sharma urged all members of the force to renew their dedication to duty and to uphold the values of integrity, courage, and service. “Let us rededicate ourselves to protecting our people, preserving the integrity of our nation, and being ready to make the supreme sacrifice whenever duty demands,” he said.

The DGP reflected on the origins of the commemoration, recalling the 1959 Hot Springs incident in Aksai Chin, Ladakh, where 10 CRPF personnel were martyred by Chinese troops. The tragedy became a defining moment in Indian policing history, leading to the annual observance of October 21 as a day of remembrance for fallen heroes.Among those honoured was Constable Chandan Das of the 9th NAP (IR) from Nagaland, who was remembered for his bravery and commitment. DGP Sharma praised the professionalism of the Nagaland Police, noting that their tireless work in maintaining peace and public confidence continues to bring pride to the state.
“Today is not only a day of mourning but also a celebration of the indomitable spirit of our police personnel,” Sharma said. “Their sacrifices remind us of the price of peace and the value of courage.”The ceremony included the reading of the roll of honour by AIGP Rangkathung Vikram Ezung, followed by a wreath-laying at the police cenotaph by senior officials. The solemn event concluded with a moment of silence in memory of the departed, reaffirming the force’s commitment to uphold the ideals for which their comrades gave their lives.
