Nagaland’s Democracy Thrives on Dialogue and Consensus, Says Abhijit Sinha on National Voters’ Day

Nagaland’s democratic culture is firmly rooted in dialogue, consensus and collective decision-making rather than imposed authority, Home Department Principal Secretary Abhijit Sinha said on January 25, stressing that this tradition must be safeguarded through active, informed and fearless participation in elections. He was speaking at the state-level event organised to mark National Voters’ Day.

Sinha said that democracy in Nagaland has historically evolved through community discussions and shared understanding, reflecting the state’s social and political character. He cautioned against governance models where decisions are shaped by a limited few, underlining that true democratic governance must mirror the will that emerges from consultation, dialogue and agreement among the people.

Highlighting the importance of electoral participation, Sinha said faith in democracy must go beyond belief and be reflected in action at the ballot box. He urged citizens, particularly first-time voters, to participate in every election and to motivate those who feel their vote carries little significance. According to him, widespread participation is essential to preserving the democratic spirit of the state.

He also emphasised the need for electoral integrity, calling on voters to exercise their franchise without fear, pressure or inducement. Warning against undue influence, Sinha said voting decisions should not be shaped by money, religion, tribe, community or regional considerations, as such factors undermine democratic values.

Chief Electoral Officer Bhagyashree Banayat said National Voters’ Day serves as a reminder of India’s constitutional commitment to justice, liberty and equality. Referring to this year’s theme, My India, My Vote, she said a healthy democracy depends on informed citizens who actively engage in the electoral process.

During the programme, Sinha administered the National Voters’ Day pledge and presented the Best State-level Booth Level Officer award to Sentitula, a primary school teacher from the Mongya constituency in Mokokchung district, recognising her contribution to strengthening electoral processes at the grassroots level.
