Nalbari: In a heartwarming act of community service, a humble farmer from Nalbari district has built a bamboo bridge with his personal savings, ending decades of hardship for villagers cut off by poor connectivity.
For nearly 40 years, residents of Laupara — the birthplace of Bihogi Kobi Raghunath Choudhary — along with neighbouring villages Ghularpara and Nowapara, struggled to cross a river that divided their communities. Amid this persistent challenge, farmer Bahgaban Talukdar stepped forward, spending over ₹1 lakh from his own earnings to construct the bridge within just fifteen days.
“I built this bridge with my own savings because we’ve faced immense difficulties travelling this route. During the monsoon, we often had to swim across the river,” said Talukdar.

The bridge was officially inaugurated on Sunday by Sonabar Ali, President of the Nalbari District BJP Minority Morcha, who lauded the farmer’s dedication. “This bridge will help people travel safely, even at midnight during emergencies. It’s a lifeline for the villagers,” Ali remarked.
With the river’s water level now receding, the area has again become suitable for farming, and many residents have returned to resume their livelihoods. Locals expressed deep gratitude to Talukdar and appealed to the government to improve the region’s road infrastructure and ensure lasting connectivity for the long-neglected villages.
