Narang Festival to Celebrate Garo Hills’ Orange Harvest with Competitions and Cultural Showcase

The Hundred Drums Wangala Festival Committee is set to organise the Narang Festival on December 18 at Chibragre in the Garo Heritage Village, Wangala A•dam, highlighting the agricultural richness of the Garo Hills with a special focus on Komila, or oranges, one of the region’s key crops. Scheduled from 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm, the festival aims to blend traditional agrarian practices with community-driven celebrations.

A range of competitions has been planned to mark the occasion, including the Sweetest Orange Competition, Largest Orange Competition, and the popular Komila Eating Competition, all of which will offer attractive cash prizes. For the orange eating contest, oranges will be supplied by the organisers, while participants must register by paying an entry fee of Rs. 300. The competition will follow strict rules, allowing participants one minute to eat as many oranges as possible. Oranges must be peeled before consumption and completely swallowed to be counted, with violations leading to disqualification. Members of the organising committee are barred from participating.

Winners of the Komila Eating Competition will receive certificates along with cash awards of Rs. 5,000 for the champion, Rs. 3,000 for the first runners-up, and Rs. 2,000 for the second runners-up. The Sweetest Orange and Largest Orange competitions will each carry a prize of Rs. 3,000, with participants required to bring their own oranges for assessment. All competitors will be briefed on the rules at the venue before the events begin.

Beyond the daytime competitions, the festival will extend into the evening with a musical concert, headlined by Riprap, the iconic music band of the Garo Hills. The organisers have invited the public to attend and participate, describing the Narang Festival as a vibrant celebration of agriculture, culture, and collective community spirit in the region.
