ITANAGAR, Sept 20: Nawmai – The Wancho Warrior (The War for Love & Land), a historical drama rooted in Wancho history and culture, has been released across cinemas in Northeast India, marking a milestone for indigenous filmmaking in the region.
Directed by debutant filmmaker Jovi Wangjin Wangsa, the film follows a Wancho warrior who rises in rebellion to defend his people’s land, culture, identity and sovereignty against foreign invaders.
Blending war, history and romance, Nawmai explores themes of love, honour, courage and sacrifice while portraying the struggles and resilience of the Wancho community.
The film stars Powang Wangsa, Lemngam Atraham, Dharm Dingwang and Taichat Wangnowham, among others.
The film premiered at TNZ Cinema Hall in Itanagar, where film enthusiasts, members of the film fraternity and distinguished guests attended the screening. Nyato Dukam, Minister for Information and Public Relations (IPR), attended the premiere as chief guest and shared his views on the film after the screening.
For Wangsa, the film marked his first venture into directing. He also spoke at the premiere about the journey and experiences behind bringing the story to the big screen.
The film was theatrically released on September 18, 2026, across cinemas in the Northeast. For the Wancho community, Nawmai – The Wancho Warrior represents an effort to bring indigenous history, culture and storytelling to a wider audience through cinema.
