Shillong: North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Shillong has enforced stricter traffic rules across its campus following a serious accident that triggered widespread concern among students and faculty. The new guidelines, issued on November 24, include a maximum speed limit of 30 kmph and mandatory helmet use for those riding two-wheelers and bicycles.
The decision came a week after a drunk security guard allegedly rammed an old vehicle into two first-semester students near the campus gate. CCTV footage of the incident circulated widely, leading to strong criticism over the lack of traffic discipline and enforcement within the university premises.
NEHU administration stated that the latest measures form part of a “zero-tolerance policy” toward reckless driving and unsafe conduct. Authorities warned that individuals who continue to violate road safety norms will face disciplinary action.
Signboards displaying the newly imposed speed limit and mandatory helmet requirements were installed across the campus on Monday to ensure students and staff are aware of the rules.
The two injured students are recovering, though they remain under medical care at a Shillong hospital. The incident has intensified the call for more stringent safety systems within the university to prevent such occurrences in the future.
