News Desk: The death toll from the devastating flash floods that struck Nepal on August 26 has climbed to 1,355, according to the latest figures released by Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA). The floods, triggered by a catastrophic glacial and mountain collapse along the Nepal-China border, caused widespread destruction across several districts, sweeping away homes, roads, bridges and other infrastructure. The disaster also severely affected the Rasuwa district and areas along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river systems.

Nearly 5,000 people remain unaccounted for, according to the latest reports, with rescue teams continuing operations in some of the worst-hit areas. A significant number of those missing are believed to be workers at hydropower projects, many of whom may be trapped inside tunnels. More than 21,000 personnel, including members of the security forces, have been involved in search and rescue operations. International assistance has also been provided as authorities race against time to locate survivors and recover bodies from heavily damaged areas. Nepal observed a national day of mourning on Monday in memory of the victims. Government offices across the country, as well as Nepali diplomatic missions abroad, flew the national flag at half-mast. The mourning coincided with the 13th day after the disaster, when families traditionally perform final rites for the deceased.
The scale of the disaster has left large parts of the country struggling with damaged infrastructure and disrupted access. Rescue authorities remain focused on locating missing people, particularly those believed to be trapped in hydropower tunnels. As search operations continue, the rising death toll and thousands still missing have made the August 26 floods one of Nepal’s most devastating disasters in recent years.
