Guwahati, Jan 19: The New Bongaigaon Government Railway Police (GRP) on January 18 foiled an attempt to smuggle a large quantity of cannabis by train, seizing around 25 kilograms of the contraband during a targeted operation.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, GRP personnel carried out a search aboard the Brahmaputra Mail Express, a long-distance train commonly used for inter-state travel. During the operation, the police recovered the cannabis, which was suspected to have been transported for illegal distribution.
One person was arrested in connection with the smuggling attempt. The accused was identified as Sudhir Kumar, a resident of Bihar, and was taken into custody at the spot before being handed over for further legal procedures.
Officials said the seizure marked a significant success in efforts to curb narcotics trafficking through railway networks, which have increasingly drawn the attention of law enforcement agencies.
The New Bongaigaon GRP has registered a case under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Further investigation is underway to trace the source of the contraband and to determine whether the accused is linked to a larger inter-state drug trafficking network.
