New De-Addiction and Rehabilitation Centre Inaugurated in East Siang

Itanagar: In a bid to strengthen the fight against drug addiction, Pasighat East MLA Tapi Darang on Saturday inaugurated a new De-Addiction and Rehabilitation Centre set up by The Sober Society at Gobo, about three kilometres from Tode Village Char-ali near Rani Village in East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh.The centre, an initiative led by The Sober Society chairman and recovered addict Mingat Mibang, is designed to offer a safe and structured environment for individuals struggling with substance dependence. With facilities to accommodate 45 residents, the centre provides medical and psychological support, detoxification units, and a 90-day rehabilitation programme aimed at holistic recovery.

                  Addressing the inauguration, MLA Darang lauded the effort as a “ray of hope” for youth battling addiction. He urged the management to ensure transparency and accountability in operations, citing public concerns over mismanagement in some privately run facilities in the past. “This institution should stand as a sanctuary of healing and transformation — a place where our youth regain trust, dignity, and purpose,” he said. Darang also assured full cooperation and assistance from his office to support the centre’s functioning.The inauguration ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including East Siang SP Pankaj Lamba (IPS), District Medical Officer Dr. Yagling Perme, ICDS Deputy Director Smty Mailong Taku Padung, JNC Principal Dr. Tasi Taloh, and social workers such as Kennedy Bagra from Mothers’ Vision, Aalo.

               Built as a non-profit and voluntary venture, The Sober Society’s centre envisions a drug-free Arunachal through evidence-based therapy and community engagement. The facility includes two dormitories, a therapeutic hall, detoxification rooms, a 60-seat dining area, staff quarters, and an administrative wing — all under constant CCTV monitoring for safety.Chairman Mingat Mibang expressed optimism that the centre would become a “symbol of hope and recovery.” He added, “Our goal is not only to rehabilitate but also to prevent. With collective effort, we can create a society where our youth live with purpose and free from addiction.”
