Guwahati, Feb 20: Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that the new terminal at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport will commence operations on February 22.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the ₹4,000-crore Integrated Terminal-2 building on December 20 last year. The upgraded facility is designed to handle 13.1 million passengers annually, significantly enhancing capacity at the airport, which is named after Assam’s first chief minister, Gopinath Bordoloi.
During the inauguration ceremony, the Prime Minister also unveiled an 80-foot statue of Bordoloi outside the new terminal.
Sarma described the development as a major leap for the state’s connectivity. “From an open space to a world-class gateway in just a few years. This transformation reflects a clear vision for a more connected and confident Assam,” he said in a post on X, adding that the airport would “open its doors to the world” from February 22.
Officials indicated that both domestic and international flight operations are expected to shift fully to the new terminal by March. The existing terminal building will subsequently be repurposed as a dedicated cargo hub, strengthening the airport’s logistics and freight capabilities.
