Guwahati, March 6: The body of a newborn girl was discovered in a village in Merapani in Assam’s Golaghat district on March 6, leaving local residents shocked and prompting a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to local sources, the infant’s body was found early in the morning at Bhakat Gaon in Merapani. The body had been wrapped in a polythene bag and was lying behind the backyard of a house in the village. A local resident reportedly noticed the polythene-wrapped bundle and, upon discovering the body, alerted other villagers.
The discovery quickly created a stir in the area, drawing a large number of residents to the spot as news of the incident spread through the village.
Police personnel from Merapani Police Station were informed soon after the body was found and arrived at the location to take stock of the situation. The body of the newborn was subsequently recovered by the police.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances under which the infant’s body was abandoned and to identify those responsible for the incident.
