NFR and IIT-G Showcase AI-Based ‘DRISHTI’ System

Guwahati:  In a major step toward technological modernization, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) and the IIT Guwahati Technology Innovation and Development Foundation (IITG TIDF) jointly organized a technical presentation on November 6 at the General Manager’s Conference Hall, NFR Headquarters, Maligaon.

The IITG TIDF team showcased their AI-based surveillance system ‘DRISHTI’, an advanced Locking Monitoring System designed for goods wagons. The presentation was part of the MoU signed on November 19, 2024, between NFR and IIT Guwahati, to develop intelligent monitoring solutions using high-speed imaging, computer vision, and artificial intelligence.

The session was attended by the General Manager of NFR along with several Principal Heads of Departments (PHoDs), who discussed the scope of integrating AI-driven surveillance across NFR’s freight network.

Developed to address the challenge of detecting unlocked or tampered doors in moving freight stock, DRISHTI employs AI-powered cameras and sensors to monitor door positions in real time. The system autonomously identifies irregularities and issues automated alerts without interrupting train operations.

The prototype, which has been under successful trial for the past ten months, has shown promising accuracy levels. Officials stated that the innovation is expected to bring greater transparency, reliability, and security to freight operations while reducing manual checks and enhancing rolling stock safety across the NFR network.
