Guwahati: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has stepped up preparations to ensure safe and smooth train operations during the upcoming foggy and inclement weather months. In accordance with Railway Board guidelines, locomotives across the zone are being equipped with Fog Safe Devices to help Loco Pilots accurately identify signals and markers even under severely low-visibility conditions. Automatic signalling systems are also being upgraded to the latest standards to strengthen reliability during fog.
To reinforce infrastructure safety, NFR has ensured adequate stock of detonators and has carried out lime-marking on key track locations for better visual guidance. Signal sighting boards and level crossing gates have been repainted with luminous strips, while LED-based flasher tail lamps are being fitted on rear coaches. Retro-reflective STOP boards and other visibility-enhancing aids are being verified and reinforced across fog-prone routes.

Operational strategies have also been deployed to minimise congestion and maximise safety during low visibility. Train movement patterns are being rationalised where necessary, while Loco Pilots, Assistant Loco Pilots and Guards are undergoing specialised fog-operation training and refresher courses at Zonal and Supervisor Training Centres. Crew-changing points and locomotive links are being closely monitored to maintain punctuality and operational discipline.
To assist Station Masters in on-ground assessment, Visibility Test Objects (VTOs) are being installed or validated at all designated stations. Based on real-time fog intensity, Station Masters will take appropriate safety actions including deploying fog signalmen or placing detonators.
NFR has assured passengers that comprehensive technical, operational and safety measures are fully in place to maintain safe and reliable train travel throughout the fog season. Passengers have been advised to stay updated through official communication channels for real-time information on train movement and advisories.
