Guwahati: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has paid tribute to the courage and sacrifice of Kirti Chakra and Sena Medal awardee Captain Sunil Kumar Chowdhary of the 7/11 Gorkha Rifles by rechristening WDP4B Locomotive No. 40024 in his honour at the Siliguri Diesel Locomotive Shed.
Captain Chowdhary, celebrated for his bravery, discipline and leadership, earned the Sena Medal for exceptional courage during counter-insurgency operations in Assam. He was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra for conspicuous gallantry beyond the call of duty.

NFR officials noted that the high-speed 4,500 HP WDP4B twin-stroke diesel locomotive—renowned for reliable performance under adverse conditions—embodies endurance, resilience and service. These values, they said, reflect the spirit of both the Indian Railways and the Armed Forces.
The dedication carries special emotional relevance for the North-Eastern region and the Siliguri Corridor, known for its long association with the Gorkha Regiments and their role in protecting India’s strategic frontiers. Officials added that Indian Railways, a key lifeline for the North-East, is proud to align itself with this legacy of valour. As Locomotive No. 40024 traverses the network, it will serve as a moving tribute to the supreme sacrifices made by the nation’s soldiers.
